If you have to remove a rear-wheel half shaft to change an oil seal, you may need to hire a slide hammer. It has a long shaft with a stop block at one end, and a plate for bolting to the wheel hub at the other. There is a heavy sliding weight on the shaft.
To use the hammer, the weight is pushed with force along the shaft from the hub end, and its momentum helps to withdraw the half shaft.
The bolt plate must be suitable for the wheel hub of the make of car concerned. Universal tools with adaptable bolt plates are available.
